Martin Stabe: One site, two issues in online journalism

In the words of the folks at 37 Signals, who are at the cutting edge of the internet-driven business revolution: "You don't have a scaling problem yet."

I take your point that there is a journalism gap but let's give innovators like Rick all the support we can and worry about scaling later.

BTW having had a drink with Rick last time I was up in Norwich, I suspect he would have mixed feelings about being described as an innovator.

He has a reassuringly down-to-earth approach to what he's doing. He knows his job and he knows his audience. He's learning the medium fast. Scaling - which in a way is a problem to aspire to, rather than one to fear - can be tackled later.

Certainly, part of this is the fact that the journalist in question is having to act as a self-employed entrepreneur, which is much more involved - time-wise - than showing up for work and being a journalist.

My hat's off to the folks like this gent who are trying to make it work.
